"But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect." 1 Corinthians 15:10
This morning as I set my mind to pray for President Obama, I quickly scanned through the news headlines and updates to see if there was anything urgent that needed praying for. Do you know what I found? A headline that just saddened me and made me shake my head. The headline said "Conservatives prepare to fight Obama court pick". Now, at first glance that may sound fairly normal in this day and age, except that you would expect that headline after a particular person has been nominated for consideration. The problem is that in this case, no person has been selected, and I think this seemingly plain headline actually speaks volumes about our country right now, and it shows that we really need to spend time praying for it. Before any one person has been nominated for the Supreme Court, people are preparing to fight against the nominee- regardless of who it is. Is this fighting just for fighting's sake or...?
"If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand." Mark 3:25
I think that there is a fine line between thinking for yourself and voicing your opinion, and actually fighting against every idea. It is my prayer this morning that the people who make the big decisions in this country will listen to the opinions of their constituents, and then find a way to work together to find solutions. When we drift from one extreme to the other, all we do is fan the flames of division. We need to stop being so divided about everything! Instead of just assuming that whoever President Obama nominates is going to be too liberal, why don't we just pray for him to have Godly wisdom regarding this decision? When we commit the decisions and choices to prayer, we commit the problem and the solution to God. God knows who would be the best choice for the Supreme Court, and our prayers can put that person into the mind and favor of President Obama. This preparation for a fight is so contrary to what this country truly needs.
The fact is, we need God. We need to remember that we are "one nation, under God. Indivisible." Indivisible means a country that cannot be divided. We are 50 states united under the common banner of liberty, justice, freedom for all, and God. We are not a country if 309,065,518 individual citizens who should prepare to fight each and every one of our countrymen, simply because we think our ideas are better than theirs. Just think how much we could accomplish if we would all work together with the common goals of bettering life for each other, for our fellow countrymen, and for our mates all around the globe!
If we go back to Genesis we see with the Tower of Babel that when people purpose to work together, we can accomplish exactly what we set out to do.
"The LORD said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them." Genesis 11:6
We need to plan for good and not harm. We need to try to work together, for a country that works together under God is a country that can bring good change to the entire globe.
